| Used
extensively in aerospace and defense, materials
from Brush are helping to save and protect lives,
defend our homeland and national security, transport
us across continents in hours, and lead the
way to new discoveries in the outer reaches
of space.
Fighting
the War on Terror
In defense applications, beryllium
products aid the nation’s fighter jets,
bombers, transport and surveillance planes,
helicopters, tanks, cruise missiles and other
weaponry. In many of these uses, there’s simply
no substitute for our materials. Components
made from beryllium perform under some of the
most demanding performance requirements imaginable
– even against extraordinary vibration, and
gravitational and heat pressures.
Lofty
missions
Since the early days of NASA, when beryllium
heat shields protected spacecraft, materials
made by Beryllium
Products have had a front seat in our nation’s
space exploration. Beryllium’s unique properties
– stiffness, strength, light weight, temperature
resistance and reflectivity – are mission critical
to current and upcoming NASA programs.
Optical
grade beryllium from Brush Wellman has been
selected as the technology for NASA’s $825 million
James Webb Space Telescope’s primary mirror.
All the mirror blanks have been shipped, ahead of schedule and to our customer's delight.
Beryllium
mirror materials from Brush Wellman are already
sending back breathtaking images of the universe
from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope.
If
the solar system suddenly seems a little smaller
following NASA’s January 2003 landings on Mars,
thanks in part go to our AlBeMet® aluminum-beryllium
metal matrix composite. More than 350 structural
fittings made of AlBeMet®
helped to protect NASA’s Spirit and Opportunity
rovers on their landings, and then served again
to unfold the rovers’ drive-off ramps.
Taking
to the Skies
In
commercial aerospace, alloy materials from Brush
Wellman are getting us where we need to
go and back … safely and reliably. Aircraft
landing gears, landing gear doors, wing edge
actuators, fuel and oil pumps, and shielding
devices are among the applications our beryllium-containing
alloys and ToughMet®
materials serve in this growing market.
Our
alloys reduce aircraft weight, increase their
cargo payload, provide better service life through
reduced maintenance and boost aircraft fuel
efficiency.
